Computerized Tomography (CT)
Computed Tomography (CT) images
the body in cross-sectional planes through the use of x-rays.
An intravenous injection of contrast media (iodine) is used
during most exams. Compared to standard x-ray the invention
of CT is a great advancement for imaging of the brain, lung,
spine, and solid organs of the body. Information obtained
during the x-ray exposure is processed by a high-speed computer,
which produces multiple computerized images of the area.
Most patients tolerate the exam
very well, although a small percentage may feel slightly
claustrophobic. CT is an excellent diagnostic tool for identifying
the origin and nature of masses in various areas of the body.
CONTRASTED CT EXAMS
CT
Abdomen-- Oral Contrast (Barium) & Injection-
Multiple images are made of the liver, pancreas, spleen, great vessels (aorta
and vena cava), kidneys, and retroperitoneal area.
CT
Pelvis-- Oral Contrast (Barium) & Injection-
Images are made through the lower abdomen (pelvis) to demonstrate possible
abnormalities in the prostate, uterus, ovaries, bladder or mesentery.
CT
Chest-- Contrast Injection-
Images the lungs and bronchi as well as the esophagus, midline chest structures
including the ascending aorta and superior vena cava and diaphragm.
CT
Head-- Contrast Injection-
Images the brain tissue and the ventricles of the brain.
CT
Orbits-- Contrast Injection-
Images the orbit for diagnosis of fractures following injury.
CT
Neck-- Contrast Injection-
Images the structures of the neck including lymph nodes.
Examination Time: 45 minutes
to 1 hour.
Precautions: Patients who are
allergic to iodinated contrast (x-ray dye) should be medicated
prior to their examination. Check with the patient's physician
or a radiologist before scheduling.
*Note: Patients with a history
of renal insufficiency should have BUN and creatinine levels
drawn prior to scheduling. Please have this information available
when scheduling the exam.
Patient Instructions: No prep is necessary for any CT procedure.
NON-CONTRASTED CT EXAMS:
The following CT's usually require
no preparation or contrast material:
CT
Sinuses--
Images sinus cavities and masses within the maxillary, frontal sphenoid, and
ethmoid sinuses.
CT
Spine (Cervical & Lumbar)--
Used to evaluate spinal stenosis, disc herniation, and degenerative disc disease.
CT
Extremities--
Is usually non-contrasted but some soft tissue masses may need to have a contrast
injection.
Examination Time: 30 to 45 Minutes.
Precautions: None
Patient Instructions: No prep is necessary for any CT procedure.
