Recently, we had the privilege of sitting down for a conversation with Bright Pink founder and CEO, Lindsay Avner. The lady packs an awesome and inspiring amount of knowledge, which she shares with great clarity and enthusiasm. In other words, we were impressed. Below is her story, the story of Bright Pink, and most importantly, the story of You. This is the final piece: part three in a series of three. (You can find parts one here and two here.)
Part Three: The Story of You… and Your Action List
As interesting as Lindsay Avner is, and as invigorating as the conversation was, her bright energy is consistently focused on others. She insists that the warmth and support of others fuels her organization. She and her team act out of their care for others. They want to help every YOU that they can.
When it comes to your health her reminder is astoundingly simple and often overlooked. Avner points out: “Your doctor is only half of the equation. You need to bring things up to your doctor. Intuition speaks so loudly – get a second opinion if you feel you need one. And this is critical: no one has a greater responsibility to take care of our bodies than ourselves.”
At the end of our interview, Lindsay Avner had one last thing to add: she gave us a to-do list. She says she never likes to leave a conversation without empowering others with at least two pieces of information or action. Almost immediately, the following appeared in our inbox – a very gracious thank you note with two links included:
One was to Bright Pink’s innovative Assess Your Risk tool, which “combines family history and lifestyle behaviors to provide an initial breast and ovarian cancer risk profile.” It comes in the form of a downloadable summary PDF that a woman can take to her doctor to start the discussion around implementing a proactive health management strategy. (And it’s so cool even the CDC wants in on using it.)
The other was to a fantastic tool called Underwire Alerts. It is “a breast self-awareness mobile text message reminder program.” People can opt in online or by simply texting PINK to 59227 for a monthly reminder to check their breasts.
So we now have a to-do list. Doesn’t it look exactly like yours? Thank you Lindsay Avner and Bright Pink for your time and energy that went into making these posts!
